When all America has to compare matchmakers to are reality television dating shows that seem to have a batting average in long term relationships lower than Major League Baseball’s worst player (.197), it’s time the world knows a wickedly good matchmaker exists. Even if I’m not matchmaking for a television show, that’s okay. We’re private about who we work with. The single men and women who hire us for the most part are not looking to have their private dating lives on national television. I do however predict SPIES is about to become a 19-year overnight sensation in finding happily ever afters. We have proof of concept, now.

To all who believe in love and all who have that forever love already, you are my inspiration every day.

I have a soft spot in my heart for grandparents everywhere.  I grew up in a small town named Lincoln, Illinois.  Grandma and Grandpa Higgins and Grandma and Grandpa Fitzpatrick were married always and only to each other.  Grandma Higgins was 22 when she met Grandpa.  I hear he’d watch her go by his dry goods store every day.  He was smitten by the young woman in the pretty hats.  Grandma Higgins was 96 when Grandpa passed away at almost 101.  There was a picture of them in the paper with her at his bedside when he turned 100 or something.  No one got divorced until my generation.  My parents only ever spent a night apart when one was in the hospital. 

On the CBS Survivor Reunion Show, 8 million viewers watched the replay of the loved ones visit to Survivor Island where cast member Tarzan bends on one knee and Terri, his wife of 30 years, runs out of the woods and into his arms.  (See yesterday’s post: Cast member Tarzan and wife Terri’s true love is what will be remembered by Survivor fans this season, not who won the million dollars.)  She tearfully shares with host and executive producer Jeff Probst, “You take him away, I’m lost.”

Sap that I am, my brain starts playing Kathy Mattea’s song “Where’ve you been?”  It’s a song about a couple who never spent a night apart until they were in the hospital in separate beds on different floors.

What I didn’t know is Kathy Mattea’s husband, Jon Vezner, co-wrote the song about his grandparents, with Don Henry.  Per NedNickerson2010 on YouTube (many thanks), this is the touching true story behind Kathy Mattea’s biggest hit, “Where’ve You Been.”

“The song was written for Kathy Mattea, who initially refused to record it, saying it would be too difficult to sing in concerts without crying.  Co-writers Jon Vezner and Don Henry pitched the song all around Nashville.  Everyone loved the song, but no one wanted to record it.  In the end, Mattea finally relented and recorded the song the way it had originally been presented to her – a simple arrangement with guitar, piano, and upright bass.

She recalls: “It’s a true story about Jon’s grandparents.  They had both gotten very sick and were in the same hospital, but didn’t know it.  His grandmother had been slowly losing it, and she didn’t recognize anybody.  She was in unfamiliar surroundings, so she finally quit talking altogether.  Jon was there visiting, and he was up seeing his grandfather; he said to the nurse, “Has anybody brought him down to see her?”  She said no, and he asked if he could do that.

“They said yes, so he wheeled his grandfather into his grandmother’s room.  His grandfather kept stroking her hair, saying, “Look at her hair.  Nobody has hair like grandma,” and she looked at him and said, “Where have you been?”  It was the first thing she had said in weeks.

“When Jon told me the story for the first time, it was before we had even gotten engaged, and he just cried and cried.  When he played the song for me and the first chorus came around, I knew where he was going with the lyric, and I just couldn’t believe he could be that vulnerable as a writer, to put that moment in a song.”

The song was Mattea’s biggest hit, winning her a Grammy.  It also won Song of the Year (1990) at the Grammys, CMA’s and ACM’s.”

My Dad’s name was also Edwin and he was unlucky in Alzheimer’s, too.  But we had precious memories I’ll cherish forever as his memory diminished.  My parents were like one person.  Because my Mom’s cataract surgeries failed, they walked arm-in-arm everywhere.  They lived for each other.  It’s the kind of love I wish for everyone.  My Dad was in the hospital to say goodby to my Mom.  So was I.  And I was there at hospice to share his departure. Both knew they were loved.

Cast member Tarzan and wife Terri’s true love is what will be remembered by Survivor fans this season, not who won the million dollars.

If you want to believe in love, last night’s Survivor Reunion show brought it!

This season’s loved ones visit to Survivor Island took the cast and the world by surprise when the most annoying remaining cast member Tarzan (plastic surgeon Greg Smith) was reunited with his wife.  Not one shy of dramatics this season, Tarzan knelt on one knee when it was his turn to wait for his loved one.  His wife of 30 years comes running out of the jungle and into his awaiting arms.  It was a scene from a romance novel.  As a matchmaker who wants everyone in the world to find this kind of true love, I am thankful to CBS for making a big deal out of it.

If you watched this season, Tarzan made it a point to annoy.  You got tired of vocabulary-man’s overuse of big words, even in your living room.  That was his strategy to get to the finals.  If no one liked him, he might make it to the finals because he wouldn’t be a threat to win the million dollars in a fellow cast (off) member vote!  But Tarzan, who said he’s been called Tarzan since age 8, had the romantic moment of the season.  It will be remembered more than who won the million dollars.  I think, anyway.    (Kind of reminds you of Renee Russo’s speech in Tin Cup…”Roy, no one will remember who won, but they’ll remember your 15 shot hole-in-one!” or something like that)

Here’s last night’s loving cutaway scene of the season from the Reunion show (after awarding one million dollars to Kim Spradlin):

"You take him away, I'm lost," Terri hugs her husband, CBS Survivor cast member Tarzan on the loved ones visit. This is the kind of love that gives us all life. Even if you have to trace it back to your grandparents or beyond, real love and commitment are in our bloodline.

“You take him away, I’m lost,” Terri Smith tearfully revealed to host Jeff Probst and the world watching.

“What is the secret to this magical love affair?” Probst probed.

“We have care, respect and responsibility. And we cannot lie to each other,” Terri Smith replied immediately, shaking her head in a ‘no, we don’t do that’ on the lie part.

Do you wish your relationship was that strong?  What Tarzan and Terri teach us is that they made a pact from the beginning of their marriage.  They’ve been married 30 years and they can’t live without each other!  That’s Hollywood material.

They have a strong love.  The way she recited the motto from memory was how some employees and CEOs recite corporate values for the most successful companies.  Stay tuned for that blog post.

I find when I introduce or meet couples who have the strongest relationships, they put the other person first!  They make a commitment.  Each one of them is dedicated to honoring their commitments.  When they honor their commitment to love and support each other and ask, as my friend Steve Hardison asks his wife every day, “What can I do for you?,” they have the strongest marriages.

QUESTIONS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER IN LOVE

What do you commit to in your relationship with the one you love?  Or what do you commit to being when you fall in love again?  Perhaps it’s time to think about that.

Tarzan and Terri, and likely, your grandparents and great-grandparents, are role models for everyone who wants to believe in true love and commitment.

No matter how much faster society is moving today than it did in the days our grandparents fell in love, marriage has become an easier ceremony to say “I do” in because divorce is a more acceptable solution when things get rough – than it used to be.

You might be keeping yourself safe from dating the best men (or women).

One of the best exercises you can do when you finally put finding someone extraordinary to share your life with on the front burner, is to look closely at what you are letting get in your way.  Don’t skip this step.  This one could be the most important thing keeping men (or women) from getting close to you.

I had personally mastered not letting anyone get close to me.  Sometimes it takes someone else to point it out to you.  It happened to me one night, when I was on active duty in the Navy.  I was going to college at night in Panama City, Florida, and riding my bicycle home in the dark.  I didn’t see the speed bump.  My tire turned 90 degrees and I hit the ground so fast, it stunned me.  I reached my hand up and it felt warm immediately from the blood.  I needed stitches.  Luckily, a very handsome, tall, blond, tan Navy Hospital Corpsman saw the whole thing and rescued me.  He threw my bike in the back of his jeep and rushed me a short drive down Highway 98 to the Navy Base Dispensary.  While he was stitching me up (four stitches) and using special tape to save shaving my head, for which I was thankful, he told me I didn’t have to worry about men on the base hitting on me.  “You don’t let anyone get close enough to find out if they have good intentions,” he told me.  How did he know?  But he was right.  And it took a long time for me to change.  I did change, though.

What you need to detect is – are you throwing up self-protection mechanisms too fast? 

Does anyone have even a chance of a conversation with you that could develop into an invitation for a date, you to him or he to you?  If you are self-protecting, this may be a skill you have mastered and it will take deprogramming or reprogramming through practice until you become comfortable with yourself and being friendly when you’re around someone you might like to date.

I want you to notice the next time you meet someone you might want to get to know whether you are putting out happy to meet you vibes.  Just an open friendliness is sometimes all it takes.  Then you get to see if they’re nice, too!

Don’t go manic, and be over-the-top friendly, too open invitation that says, I’m so available anyone will do, please, could it be you?  That can scare someone off or make them think you’re not selective at all. 

And if all else fails and you want to summon a great moment, STOP your thoughts.  Don’t worry what this post advised you.  Close your eyes and open them with an easy smile and look at who’s in front of you.  And enjoy the moment. 

Now, if you’re a guy and you’re trying to have better engagements with someone you are attracted to, be yourself.  “Act natural.”  Isn’t that irony?  Like jumbo shrimp?  But you know what I mean.  Relax.  Take off your work hat.  Let go of being distracted by a million things, including your smart phone.  Be in the moment.  It will be refreshing!  Look for a way to offer help.  Give her a compliment.  If you’re both in business mode and this looks even for a moment, promising, make eye contact and offer a smile.

Don’t let months and years of great opportunities for a relationship with someone you meet pass you by before you realize you haven’t let your guard down.

Start seeing what’s right in front of you.

Once upon a time, on the north shore of Long Island, not far from New York, there was a very very large mansion, almost a castle, where billionaire Linus Larrabee realizes there was something missing in his life...like a life. Sabrina, 1995

This whole scenario is reminiscent of the metamorphosis Harrison Ford aka workaholic billionaire Linus Larrabee makes when he spends time with the chauffeur’s just back from Paris daughter Julia Ormond in Sabrina.  She helps him realize “there was something missing in his life…like a life.”

Started assessing how you are with men or women you come into contact with who appear very datable.

Think about all the people you’ve met that you’ve had a moment of curiosity with.  The best thing is, the right person will also be curious about you.  If they get to see the datable you. Not the business you. Not the unaffected you. But the you that attracts.  The you that gives your best, or at least a somewhat inviting smile and opens up the world when you say hello.  The right guy needs little provocation.  Even a small smile can work!  And you don’t even know if you want them yet, so if you find out after you smile and start talking together, whoah, this is not a guy you want to keep talking with, you got data you didn’t have before, didn’t you?  Well done!  Move on.

It only takes one.  You’re one closer to the right one.

People think that if you’re turning 40 and you’ve never been married, there’s something wrong with you.  You are either commitment phobic, have abandonment issues (both could be true), or there is something men learn while dating you that makes them want to date somebody else.  Maybe you do that to them!  And maybe you need to stop.

It dawned on me, I am putting two threads of advice into this piece that are both important. One about selecting men who are unavailable and the other about behaviors you’re bringing into your relationships that are keeping you safe from going the distance with anyone.  So I’ve written a follow-up post with how to look at what your behaviors are and identify what’s behind them.

The first thing I look at when I am at an event hunting for super eligible single men and women is so simple, you’ll be surprised.  Yes, physical attraction and appearance are the visual first takeaway I see from a distance.  But when I get up close, there’s one universal quality that all men and women are drawn to.  It’s the same for this matchmaker.  I look for genuineness in their smile.

Cameron Diaz has that smile nailed!  She has one of the quickest, most inviting smiles I can think of.  Can you think of anyone who smiles this big?  Feel free to post it in the comments.  When Cameron Diaz smiles, it feels like she’s happy to the core.  She’s portraying she is going to be fun to be on a date with.  Besides her being a long-legged, blue-eyed blond (hey-ey, me, too!), her smile has attracted Matt Dillon, Jared Leto – who told Details magazine he saw no point in marriage, and Justin Timberlake – who is engaged to Jessica Biel.

A recent ex of hers, New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, said Diaz is “probably one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever met, and just an amazing light” in an interview with Kevin Frazier for TheInsider.com.  Attracting men has not been a problem for the famous Hollywood actress.  She’s had multi-year relationships.

A-Rod said later in that interview that Hollywood’s most notorious bachelor, one-time and never to be married again George Clooney, is his role model.  Ding!  Ding!  Ding!  Danger, Will Robinson!

You can find George Clooney’s (and it seems every celeb’s) dating history on Who’s Dated Who.  While it’s an impressive, long list of beautiful women, think of who you’ve dated.  If you’re approaching 40 and haven’t been married, there are probably a few photos in your man album, too.  I realize, some men are probably going to read this and have the same stuff in their way of finding true love and marriage as women do.

So, girlfriends, are you picking the right men to date?  Or are you keeping safe by picking the wrong men?  They say nice guys finish last.  Are you bypassing the good ones to go out with the ones who you can tell are trouble?  They’re low risk because they have no potential!  You have nothing to complain about if you can’t resist the attentions of a bad boy.  The bad boys can be intoxicating.  But if they are narcissists, once they have won you over, they will be looking for their next challenge.  Eventually, the girl who wants a serious relationship will return her bad boy.  You wouldn’t be reading this article, most likely, if you didn’t find some self truths in here.

The question to ask yourself is, what do you really want?  If it’s the best relationship you could ever imagine with a wonderful man, why are you letting yourself get in your own way?  Is it because it’s better to date the wrong somebody than nobody?  You know dating the wrong ones keeps opportunities to meet the right ones  out of reach.

Look at your men choices you’ve made.  Get to know yourself…better.  These are your starters to think about.  Before you jump into something with the next person you date, look at what you see in them and if you are truly looking for a meaningful relationship, make sure it’s not an early identifiable Mr. Wrong.  I’ve asked divorced men and women why they got divorced and when they knew.  Some said they knew before they married them. 

It turns out, in a study by the National Center for Health Statistics, more single women are cohabiting and waiting longer to get married.  I don’t know if that makes unmarried women approaching 40 feel any better.  But you’re not alone.

If you were a girl writing seeking a wealthy man, I would tell you I don’t work with gold diggers and if you want a sugar daddy, I’m trying to protect my clientele from people after them for their money.

So, switch the sexes, same answer.

If you were wealthy and that was the reason for seeking someone wealthy, it still is such a narrowing criteria.  It would eliminate so many wonderful single women who might be the better one to love and support you and your dreams and be at your side forever.  Those would be the leading criteria I could search on.  And knowing you have a job probably means you’re not independently wealthy.

You are the first one who’s written me to seek a wealthy woman (in 18 years).  But I’m old fashioned.  I believe in true love.  I want people to meet for the right reasons.  To have someone who will love them, no matter what, in good times and bad, richer and poorer.  If you marry for the right reasons, you’ll conquer anything together.

Throughout the entire PGA Tour, there is no golf tournament like the WM Phoenix Open. The Phoenix Open is the Super Bowl meets Mardi Gras of people watching.

Every year, women get on their boots and tight and/or low cut sexy outfits and head to Scottsdale’s TPC Golf Course in hopes of landing a wealthy golf watcher, celebrity, or corporate sponsor CEO caliber man. Ladies, hold onto your husbands and boyfriends. But there’s hope. With individual days’ attendance hitting 50-100,000 people, you will find there are good singles with good values. Keep reading!

I’ve attended hundreds, actually thousands of events looking for Mr. and Miss Rights for very eligible single men and women since creating SPIES – an executive-search style matchmaking firm in 1994. SPIES stands for Single Professional Introductions for the Especially Selective. The results we’ve obtained – SPIES 95% success rate – is because we’re constantly at the best events, and admittedly sometimes not the best events – we don’t know until we get there, looking for love.

Why is it easier to find good single men than good single women at the Phoenix Open?

It’s easier to spot good single men during the day at the WM Phoenix Open than at night at the Birds Nest and than it is to spot good single women at either. The good single men are the ones watching the golf! Some are also entertaining customers and vendors. Some bring their kids and have a blast inside the Expo Tent and walking around the course.

If you look hard, there are nice, pretty and normal single women at the Open. You just have to look harder to find them amidst so many girls in catch-a-man’s-attention outfits and high heels before you spot a couple nurses or school teachers who stand out because they don’t stand out, who’ve ventured into the treacherous waters of the Open for a day of fun.

This week is the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open PGA Golf Tournament. With 400,000-600,000 previous years’ weekly visitor counts, it’s become known as “The Greatest Show on Grass”…for what happens on the fairways and even more for the business networking, partying and girl and guy watching that happens in the corporate skyboxes and party tents alongside it.

At the end of each day’s golf, Wednesday through Saturday, there’s the Coors Light Birds Nest huge entertainment tent with scantily clad, mostly 20-something female servers who could give Hooter’s a run for their money. It took some digging to find the lineup of entertainment at the 2012 Phoenix Open Coors Light Bird’s Nest. I couldn’t find it on their fancy new iPhone app. That’s another new addition.

You are now allowed to keep in touch with the office and your family and bring in your iPhones and Androids and you don’t have to hide them in your socks or underwear (their words). There are restrictions on their site. We’ll see who pays attention to it. At least, please turn your ringers off.

The Thunderbirds have donated $75,529,794 to Arizona Charities!

Millions of dollars, $4,053,962 in 2011 alone, have been donated to Arizona charities via the Phoenix Open by the Thunderbirds – Arizona’s most prestigious philanthropic man club. They maintain 55 Active Thunderbirds who, with the help of Life Thunderbirds (aka Lifebirds, men who are retired from active status after years of backbreaking work, month in and month out, for this huge annual event, on their 45th birthdays into Lifebird status), have raised millions of dollars for charities as hosts of the 76 year Phoenix Open! Congratulations!

Per their own website, Thunderbirds Charities supports “the courageous athletes of the Special Olympics, youngsters of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Scottsdale, Phoenix and East Valley and the affiliated agencies of the Valley of the Sun United Way.”

One girl told me she has a first date at the Coors Light Birds Nest. (Not with a SPIES client.) How romantic. Music so loud you can hardly talk and thousands of single men and women on the hunt or being the hunted. I asked, “Why bring sand to the beach?” Maybe if you’ve been dating awhile, listening to the Goo Goo Dolls and seeing friends you haven’t seen since last year or in several years, could be a blast. A first date at the Phoenix Open Birds Nest is a true test of any visual man’s ability to stay focused on you and too soon to be testing. Good luck!

I’ll be at the Phoenix Open all week, starting with tonight’s Opening Night Tuesday Night Fever, searching for new single men and women who might be great dates for SPIES’ clientele.

We pass on gold diggers at the Open (or anywhere). Millionaires don’t have a problem finding them on their own...

People who work hard all year do and should plan to come spend a beautiful day outside on the golf course having a little fun and reconnecting with friends they may not have seen in years. I love every time I see some of the 45,000 people I’ve met in our community of 3 million residents since starting this company. And yes, if you’re a veteran Phoenix Open attendee, you know that among the thousands of attendees each day, you will find a prevalent presence of amazon blond and brunette gold diggers. They are ineligible for my matchmaking services because successful men can find girls who want their money free and this is not the Millionaire Matchmaker TV show. If you want to “meet my millionaires” (what she says on the show) and I get wind of it? “Bye bye! You’re free. And you’re on your own.” By 8 or 9 pm every night, the Birds Nest can become toxic with extreme partiers – also given a pass by this matchmaker. So, you may want to go early and get out! Plenty of tournament and early Birds Nest goers leave for nearby Scottsdale venues who host special parties for Phoenix Open attendees. Prime Bar at Scottsdale Quarter shared on Twitter they will offer a free entree or beverage with your Phoenix Open ticket.

If I haven’t seen you lately, you may enjoy learning SPIES is doing quite well! We’ve averaged introducing a marriage every six weeks since opening our doors in 1994. Through hard work and determination. As alluded to earlier, 95% of the people we introduce want to see each other again. And again. And again!

SPIES has become known for it’s unique search methods – in a good way. We’ve given back and raised over $200,000 for Phoenix area charities while out looking for special men and women to date our clientele.

Our private clientele want a relationship and to be done with serial dating the wrong ones they meet on their own. My job is finding one-in-a-millions at these events for especially selective single men and single women who might be too busy or bad at choosing the right mate or the right dates without some professional assistance. I go to more events and meet more people than they, or nearly anyone, has the time to. And I love my job!

On December 17, 2011, you were invited to cheer on 7 year old Nicklas as Surprise Fire Department brought his family home for a Big Reveal! Nicklas has a life threatening illness: osteosarcoma. You’d only know that from his wheelchair & bald head from 3 types of chemo, because he is a lively little boy whose eyes light up with love and maybe a little mischief, where you wonder what is he going to do next? You will melt when he smiles at you.

Nicklas was diagnosed in September 2011. Phoenix Children’s Hospital informed Maren Ettesvold and Maureen Geraghty his family might be perfect to receive a dream bedroom from Special Spaces!

Nicklas Carter is 7. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September. He and his family are going home today to see the first Special Spaces of Phoenix dream bedroom - his!

With about a million single adults in Maricopa County, probably about half of those people are seeking a date on any given weekend. Fortunately, there are plenty of people ready to help East Valley singletons find that special someone, such as family, friends or fate. And there are media outlets such as the newspaper and magazine personals, radio stations and Internet services.

For personal service, though, East Valley singles who really want to find someone can turn to any one of nearly two-dozen dating services.

For instance, Ahwatukee Foothills resident Mike, recently relocated from California and recently divorced, knew he wanted to date but quickly discovered “what I did when I was in college to find a date didn’t let me find the kind of person I want to date now.”

A conversation with an old college bud persuaded him to seek a dating service. After exploring several possibilities, he registered with SPIES.

Run by Roseanne Higgins, SPIES (Single Professional Introductions for the Especially Selective) is billed as the “only romance headhunters” in the country.

“Roseanne wasn’t my perception of a ‘dating service,’” Mike said. “I felt that she would give me really personal attention, and that she understood not just what I’m looking for, but also that I want to be discreet.

“You know, people my age (42) are in a different place. We’re more selective, we have reasons to be selective, and we tend to have more shields up because of our past experiences.”

Mike has been on a number of dates arranged through Higgins.
